OAKVIEW 3 – 2 PIONEER

Oakview will count themselves fortunate to pick up all 3pts after a competitive game that swung both ways. They got off to a perfect start by opening the scoring inside 2 minutes through (No.4), Pioneer recovered well from the early setback and went close to an equalizer with Aaron Dombey heading just wide. A quick break from the home side ended when a deep cross to the far post found (No.10) who planted a firm header past the keeper. It was almost 3-0 but (No.4) miss kicked when he looked certain to score. After that let off, Pioneer produced an impressive fight back in the final 15mins of the half, JJ O’Neill reduced the deficit by slotting home Neil Hayers’ through ball and then came a moment of controversy when Dombey beat the offside trap flicked the ball past the keeper who pulled him down but somehow escaped a red card from referee Dave Foster, then to make matters worse for the away side he tipped the resulting free kick round the post. Chances came and went at both ends but it was Oakview who extended their lead on 70mins when a free kick from the halfway line deceived keeper Matt Welch and floated in. Pioneer left back Kevin Williams completed the scoring in the final seconds with his first goal for the club, a stunning left foot drive into the top corner.

Pioneer 3 – 1 Hammer

After a goalless 1st half in which Pioneer looked the most threatening with Aaron Dombey, Andy Spurr & Tom Holihan all going close it was Dombey who opened the scoring just after the hour mark heading home a deflected cross from the left, he doubled the lead with another header and completed his hat-trick 10mins from time when he beat the last defender before firing into the bottom corner. Kevin Williams almost added a 4th but his dipping shot came back off the bar and was scrambled clear. Hammer’s best spell came in the final few minutes and were rewarded right on the final whistle when a free kick to the far post was neatly headed in.

A happy tale

Pioneers 10 men took on WSL Div one side Ocusta and outplayed them, every one of the 10 deserve the credit for a great team performance. The enthusiasum shown by everyone and the amount all were prepared to run for each other was great to see. Well done to Andy in goal (a clean sheet) all the new players showedthey are up to the standard and Aaron up front (is he quick or what). Paul Heffernan, Liam and Spurrie (life begins at 40) were great in midfield, JJ was never stationary in 90 mins, at the back, Tom Holian ( good spot kick) was a rock and Ben swept up like an old pro. Russell ( I'll collect the money) played well in containing their winger and best player, he was well supported by our young stud (sorry young star) from SA.on the left side. Well done to Liam for keeping thwe side afloat during a very tough couple of weeks, with extra assistance now offered, thenks to Aarons Dad, extra signings on the way, including a keeper I hear, we are moving forward. Good Luck .

Pioneer 1 - 2 Q.O.B

Andy Viney's strike wasn’t enough as a new look Pioneer team turned in a very impressive performance, controlling long periods of the game but a failure to take the chances they created cost them what would have been deserved point at the very least.

Buck Examiner Report.

The article in the Examiner was something they wrote following my e mail to them explaining the situation, it was in some ways an attempt to find some additional helpers, which we still need, even though it has be decided that ,in the short term at least, we will continue. Thanks to Liam, Ian B, Russell Brown and Andy Trickett we have some committment from within the team to make the job of functioning easier in future. I apologise for the confusion and alarm MR Chairman, I should have come to you first. Home to QOBFC at Maple cross on Sunday, lets hope we have a full compliment including Subs for a game against a side who are fairly useful. BUT then so are we when we turn UP.

Pioneer Demise

It is sad that it would appear the 1st Team are about to call it a day in the WSL. 35 players signed on at £5.00 a time and only 7 available for the B&B Cup is not great, Golf at the Grove is an attraction I suppose !!! I have written to both the Bucks Ex and the Watford Observor to let them know our plight, we may find someone come forward who is prepared to manage the side but I doubt it, if anyone knows anyone who can take on something it would help. So if we want a team it is up to all of us to do something about it, if we don't then we will have plenty of time for golf, visiting our girlfriends and every other wonderful Sunday pastime one can imagine. Think hard before you let things go beyond the point of no return, in other words by Thursday this week when the decision has to be made.

FA Sunday Cup

Considering the start we had a good performance and Pioneer could have won, JJ was excellent up front working tirelessly. We need to recruit some help off the field of play and some enthusiasum to play on it. kevin and Liam need the support from all those who signed on. Thanks Ian for helping with the management side. B&B Cup this week perhaps a good run will be the answer to the lethargic approach .

The Mount/Butler's Goal

We started brightly against the Mount. Playing 4-4-2 with Larner the creative player and Butler promoted to playing the enforcer role in midfield... The Mount were playing with their usual attacking formation and were as fit as anything and fast as jack rabbit. We managed to get a good start and play some neat football, Harvey popped up with an early goal after a nice run of play. Then up stepped Butler. After nabbing the ball in midfield he side stepped a guy and pushed forward and in one giant stride somehow found himself on the edge of their box, whilst trying to lay the ball wide he somehow caught the ball with the outside of his foot and stabbed it just inside the far post with a sublime chip. I know its hard to believe but Butler's goal was actually probably as good as you have heard! We looked like we were going to get our first points of the season but just before half time conceeded 2 goals due to Linford Christie sprinting through our defence. Went in at half time with 2-2. We had played well in the first half and really deserved to be ahead. Just after the break again we were caught with a high line and the forwards pace left them with a 1 on 1 which the git put straight between my legs. Now chasing the game we pushed on and conceeded a couple more slopy goals before Mark Larner vollied in well from a corner. The final score ended 6-3 but all in all we scored three and played quite well... next up Belmont!

2-2 draw

Well done to every player for their effort & commitment yesterday. Losing 2-0 to the defending champions , down to 10 men & with 1 of their supporters reffing it, not many teams could of come back to 2-2 and have them hanging on a bit at the end!

Pioneer 2 – 2 Oakview

A fingertip save in the dying minutes from the home keeper ensured a deserved point for 10 man Pioneer after recovering from 2-0 down. Oakview started the stronger and opened the scoring when they punished some sloppy defending with a fierce shot from 12yards that beat the keeper at the near post. The second arrived soon after when a penalty awarded against Kevin Franklin was coolly converted. Pioneer then suffered a major blow when a knee injury forced centre back Ian Birkitt off the pitch and with no subs available they had to continue with a player short, however just before the break Franklin atoned for his error with a neat finish at the end of a good move. After the restart both teams created a host of chances that were wasted but it was the 10 men that got the reward their efforts deserved when Andy Viney raced through the Oakview defence and slotted past the advancing keeper.

O'Neill double sinks Hammer

Hammer 2 – 5 Pioneer Debutant Jacques Salmon gave Pioneer a perfect start to the new season with a low left foot shot into the far corner inside the opening 5 minutes and only some fine goalkeeping & poor finishing kept them from extending the lead before Hammer fought their way back into the game. The equalizer came when a corner was pulled back to the edge of the area and the shot was deflected off Ben Adams through the crowd of players and crept in at the near post. The home side could have gone ahead but for the shot hitting the inside of the post and rolling agonisingly along the line before being cleared to safety. After a good save by Lambo his quick throw out launched a quick attack down the right which was intercepted by the defence and the back pass was mis-kicked by the Hammer keeper which let in JJ to stab the ball home from close range to prove that he’s inherited the scrappy 3yard tap in gene from his brother. The goal of the game came when the Hammer player picked up the ball in midfield and hit an unstoppable shot into the top corner from fully 30yards for a deserved equalizer. With the game evenly balanced it was an unfortunate own goal (despite Kev’s best efforts to claim it!) that put Pioneer ahead and led to 3 goals in 5mins, O’Neill adding his 2nd by lobbing the advancing keeper with Will Tullett completing the scoring.

Friendly v Gossoms End

For those that are interested the WSL beat Berkhamsted side and former FA Sunday cup national champions Gossoms End 5-0 in a friendly last sunday with a suprisingly polished performance considering it was our first friendly of the season with one recognised defender, an out field player in goal and four debutants playing. Goals were scored by new signings Paul Limbrick (3) & Jacques Salmon with JJ O'Neill getting the fifth. Particular performances of note were the debuts of Limbrick, Salmon and ex-Chalfontia player Steve Miles as well as youngsters Sam Darvell & Andy Viney

Linesman

I doubt if this will be seen by many before the season BUT, this season I will not be attending all games due toother committments and therefore won't be able to wave a flag and tkake abuse from you and the opposition for every game. We need someone who is able to do this job so as to not rely on subs etc. Alternatively every player could do just one game each through the season as part of the deal, seems fair enough OR DOES it ?? Thanks Kevin and Liam for all the work in signing on players etc.

Pioneer FC 2 Watford Irish 4

A tired and depleted Pioneer side lost this final league game of the season against an enthusiastic Irish side who battled all the way until the final whistle. The home side with 10 starters which reduced to 9 players early in the second half due to cricket committments did well to stay in the game until the end when Irish snatched the fourth goal which sealed the result. Pioneer, with JP Jamil in goal passed the ball and kept possession but were never sharpe enough in the final third of the pitch and the Watford side took a 2-0 lead at the interval. Andy Trickett pulled one back but a neat shot made it 3-1 to the visitors before Paul Gilbert crashed the ball into the roof of the net to set up a tight finish. With their energy draining after a long season, Pioneer could not raise the effort required to equalise and it was right at the death that the boys from the Emerald Isle finished things off. Under the circumstances this typical end of season game was well refereed by Tony Clement (10 out of 10), shame about the cold showers after the game, vandels have broken the boiler flues and Maple Cross playing fields has been without hot water since January. Perhaps we should sign these young thugs on and channel their aggression in the right direction, Pioneer could benefit from a bit more punch next season, especially up front.

Sunday 30th April

Following me speaking to Kevin this morning we appear to have 6 players available for Sunday's WSL game versus Watford Irish. We have already cancelled 2 games this season at a cost of £200.00 to the club, we had donations cover the costs for both those instances. If we fail to put out a side on Sunday not only will it cost us another £100, the likelihood is we will be demoted from the premier division. 3 out of 16 is a fairly high failure rate and when we consider that we have around 25 players signed on it is not good. Please can you make every effort to do all you can to get the numbers up on Sunday.

Next season

Really think we have to have another go at winning WSL next season - we are good enough - we need to have the desire to win it though. I do feel we should think very carefully about the national cup and as to whether we enter - my feeling is we should not enter next season - it costs too much money - we run behind on fixtures and end up throwing away the chance of winning B&B and league because we have too many games both on Saturdays and Sundays. We also cannot do it on the skeleton backroom help we get, if people feel differently then fine, they must however find additional players for the squad, regular helpers for duties off the pitch and support from the sidelines. It is a subject for discussion at the AGM.

Pioneer FC 1 St Josephs 2

Although Pioneer were in this game up until the final whistle, St Joes were the deserved winners and will face Oakview, who were suprisingly easily winners over Oxhey Estates in the final. The first half an hour of this game saw the Watford side dominate the game but failing to score, Pioneer gradually got themselves back into it and started to show what their game is about by passing the ball well, they were however fortunate to be still 0-0 at the break. Going down the slope in the second half Pioneer had the lions share of the possession but Joes held a deep defensive line which restricted space behind them, this frustrated Pioneer who reverted to crossing the ball from deeper positions, straight down the throats of the strong centre halves Coldrake and Keen. St Joes were breaking and kept the threat up by counter attacking and two breaks within ten minutes of each other one down either flank opened Pioneer up, suddenly the visitors were 2-0 up and seemingly cruising into the final. Pioneer's possession was not creating many real chances, there was a long shot from Trickett which was fairly comfortably taken by the keeper and a high deflection which dropped in the St Joes 6 yard box which looked goal bound before the keeper acrobatically retrieved the situation. Things did hot up in the final quarter when Kevin Franklin was felled in the box giving Trickett the chance to easily convert the spot kick to bring it back to 2-1. With the place in a final at stake the lid came off and tempers flew after Liam O'Neill became embroiled in a mellee of players from all sides follwing a heavy tackle, fotunately things calmed down as quickley as they started and the game ended with Pioneer pressing but in all honesty not having enough to find the equaliser. The overall attitude and determination from the Watford side made the difference with the tall Alex Brown a difficult customer to handle. Pioneer's Steve Bates said after the game, we are obviously disappointed to lose but to be honest we did not do nearly enough to win today. On the season as a whole, finishing third in the top flight is probably about right for a first attempt, we could have done better and now know we are good enough to challenge the top sides, the question is how much do the players really want it , we are actively looking to strengthen our squad for next season.
